Ahmedabad, November 20: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has withdrawn the zone-wise bifurcation of its schools and their functions, which was implemented by the former Chairman of School Board, AMC, in 2006. Now they will start functioning again as per their earlier pattern. The School Board was divided into five zones in 2006.

“The zone-wise functions used to cause a lot of problems related to infrastructure and sanitation work, and promotion and appraisals of principals and teachers. There are 462 schools functioning under the School Board having around 500 principals and 3,000 teachers. The problems caused by the system included delayed salaries, increments and time-to-time repairing at the schools,” said a senior official of the administrative office of the School Board, AMC.

The zone-wise functional system was introduced by Jay Prakash Desai in 2006 who was the Chairman of the School Board at that time.

“The aim behind the introduction of the zone-wise system, in 2006, was to save money, time, energy, while getting efficient outcome. Prior to the zone-wise system, three supervisors used to go to one school building for supervision if schools in three different mediums functioned from that one building, and this really did not make much sense,” said Jay Prakash Desai, former Chairman, School Board, AMC.

“At the time of implementation of the zone-wise system, then state Education Minister Anandiben Patel was also very much happy, and had agreed to this system,” he added.

I G Shaikh, supervisor of the Hindi medium schools, School Board, AMC, said: “After the implementation of the zone-wise system, the zonal supervisors used to face lots of problems and difficulties while preparing the confidential reports. Several records and files were not available at one place.”

A principal said on condition of anonymity: “We faced lots of problems during the zone-wise functional system. But I am happy that the old pattern is back.”
