The Chandigarh Police arrested 41 members of Shiv Sena for allegedly planning to carry out a protest rally against Valentine’s Day celebrations in the city on Sunday afternoon.

Over 50 people,who claimed to owe their allegiance to Shiv Sena,reportedly gathered at Mauli Jagran from where they planned to march towards different sectors of the city and hold protests against the day’s celebrations. The police took the preventive step and detained their members and took them to Manimajra police station.

“We feared disruption of law and order in the city by Shiv Sainiks,who were preparing to take an unlawful march to the city and protest against the festival. As many as 41 persons have been detained in this regard under Section 107 of the Indian Penal Code,” Station House Officer of Manimajra police station Pratap Singh said.

The police also deployed teams at busy market places and famous routes including the geri route to keep a check on incidents of hooliganism and eve-teasing. Traffic check points were erected across the city to avoid any attempt to disrupt law and order situation in the city.

“There was no disruption of activity in the city and the festival passed off smoothly. The police presence will be maintained outside popular hang-outs and markets in the city and especially clubs till late in the night,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police (Security) Kulwant Singh Pannu.

300 challaned
The Chandigarh traffic police challaned over 300 people under various traffic violations on Sunday.

The traffic police had set up 60 checkpoints in the city to crack down on violators,mostly youths. SP (Security and Traffic) HS Doon said the police cracked down on violators and those indulging in reckless driving on roads. “Youths try to show off on the day and tend to throw caution to the wind. The exercise was carried out to tighten the noose against such violators,” he said.
