Amirul death: Two cops transferred

Two police officials were today transferred in the wake of the case filed in connection with the death of 33-year-old Mir Amirul Islam, who had set himself on fire on December 3 alleging harassment and atrocities by policemen after he stood up for a rape victim.

Debashish Baidya, assistant commissioner (south eastern division) and Prasenjit Bhattacharya, OC of Karaya police station have been sent to the special branch of Kolkata Police. They have been replaced by Bikash Chattopadhyay, who was the previous AC (east suburban division) and Ashim Ali, the previous OC of Girish Park, respectively. Lalbazar authorities said these were "routine transfers".

Four officers of the Anti-Rowdy Section, led by investigating officer Gyasuddin Mondal, visited the Palm Avenue residence of Amirul and took the statements of his parents Mir Izharul Islam and Mir Shahnaz Izhar, in connection with the case against police officials Vinod Kumar, Ranjeet Yadav, Haroon Khan and Naseem Khan, who have been booked under Sections 306 (abetment to suicide), 506 (intimidation to kill) and 120B (criminal conspiracy).

"We have repeated these words over and over again but we are not tired. We will cooperate with the police till whatever length it is required to see that justice is served and those responsible for my son's death are punished," said Amirul's father.

Intellectuals too visited the residence and took out a procession to press for the demands put forward by the family. "We want someone of at least assistant commissioner's rank to take up the investigation and that a fast-track court should be put up to see that the rape victim gets justice fast and the case does not linger for years," said Md Naushad Hussain, lawyer and friend of Amirul.
