When billiards player Amit Sharma quit playing the game six years back to join his family business,he had not imagined he would come back to win the state championships in his first professional outing. After making a remarkable break of 85 points against Varun Madan in the second round-robin match, blanking him out by 2-1,Sharma repeated his performance on Wednesday to defeat Vijay Goyal 2-1 to win the Delhi state Snooker Championships, where billiards is also a part of the draw.
With this win,Sharma has made it to the Pune cue nationals, starting August 20. Qualifying for the senior category in the national events means that if he makes it to one of the last rounds,he has a strong chance to play against Geet Sethi and Pankaj Advani. It feels great to win the title after such a long break. And now I am determined to spend more time on my game, he said.
Less playing time
However, the cueist is not taking things easy and is realistic about his chances at the Pune nationals. I am not saying that I cannot win,in fact if I retain my touch,I may achieve a podium finish. But all the players at such an event have vast tournament experience behind them and I feel I lack in that department, Sharma added. Vijay Goyal is the other player to qualify for the nationals from Delhi.
Sharma revealed that it was indeed his business that motivated him to make a comeback as the cueist manufactures billiard tables and supplies them all round the globe. Initially it was difficult to take time out of my busy work schedule, but after sometime I started spending an hour playing in the office. The practice time increased gradually and I am happy it is paying off now, Sharma said.
Short-term goals
The Delhi cueist is concentrating on short term goals. For me every billiards game is special. Whether it is a club tournament or nationals,I focus on one match at a time. I have no plans for Asian Games as yet,but if I play well in Pune,I could make it to the trial camps and then the Asian Games may not seem such a far-fetched idea, Sharma said.
