Nearly 600 students of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) staged a sit-in on the tracks of the Aligarh railway station today to protest against the killing of a fellow student in Aligarh on Sunday night.
The deceased has been identified as Shahnawaz, a final year BSc student of the University. The incident occurred at a hotel outside the Aligarh railway station where Shahnawaz had gone for dinner, said Aligarh SP (City) Man Singh Chauhan.
While he was having his meal, one Haji Kallu arrived and asked him to move his motorcycle aside as he wanted to park his motorcycle. It is learnt that Shahnawaz was verbally abused by Kallu, following which an altercation took place between the two.
On being attacked by Kallu and his friend, Shahnawaz called up his friends in AMU hostel. As the students rushed to Shahnawaz’s help, Kallu whipped out his licensed pistol and shot at Shahnawaz, before fleeing. Shahnawaz was taken to hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
As the news of the incident spread, hundreds of students gathered at the AMU Medical College Hospital in the morning and then walked to the Aligarh railway station. On learning of Kallu’s arrest this morning, the agitating students demanded that he be produced before them. They later gathered on the AMU campus and also raised slogans against the V-C alleging he never attended to their complaints.
Traffic on the Aligarh-Delhi route was, meanwhile, disrupted for nearly six hours.
After postmortem, Shahnawaz’s body was sent home to Bijnore district.
