Analogue signals likely to continue till year-end

Amid differences in opinion between the central and state governments on cable digitisation, Multi Service Operators (MSOs) face a dilemma as to when they should stop analogue signals, but unofficially, they said, consumers can relax till the year-end.

"The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has asked for a detailed report as to how much digitisation has been done and how many analogue signals are still on. We will send the report to them tomorrow," said Suresh Sethia, director, Siti Cable.

He said the state anticipates a law and order situation if cable is blacked out all of a sudden. "The Centre and the state have to work together for a smooth transition," he said, adding that about 85 per cent of digitisation is complete.

Cable operators under Siti Cable, however, said the MSO has switched off some channels that were still available with other MSOs. "This will create pressure on consumers so that the set top box movement picks up," said a south Kolkata cable operator.

He said a survey was being done by police stations to find out many connections were under each cable operator.
