While the Marxists in Delhi have demanded an investigation into the role of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) in the Iraqi oil-for-food scam, their counterparts in West Bengal are rolling out the red carpet for the Ambani brothers to set up business here on a big scale.
Anil Ambani, chairman of the Reliance-Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (R-ADAG), is coming to the city on Friday to discuss four projects with Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. The estimated total investment: Rs 25,000-30,000 crore.
The four projects include a light rail transport (LRT) project between Panihati in North 24 Parganas district and Joka in South 24 Parganas district, a Dhirubhai Institute of Information Technology at Kalyani, a health city also at Kalyani, and a new airport near Dum Dum for cargo.
Last June, the Chief Minister had written to Anil inviting investments for these four projects. ‘‘We are keenly waiting for him to come here and discuss these projects,’’ said Deepankar Mukherjee, Secretary to the Chief Minister. During an earlier visit to the city on June 21 this year, Anil’s elder brother Mukesh Ambani, who is the RIL chairman, announced an investment of Rs 4,000 crore in an agri-retail chain and a gas pipeline project.
The LRT project would involve the running of multiple passenger vehicles on elevated tracks. Consulting Engineering Services (CES) has already done a survey.
Officials of R-ADAG recently visited the Czech capital of Prague to look at a similar system there.
R-DAG is competing with four other consortiums for the LRT project.
