An Assistant Police INspector (API) who had escorted Ajmal Amir Kasab to hospital after his capture at Chowpatty in the wee hours of November 27,2009,identified him in the special court inside Arthur Road Jail on Tuesday. Kasab apparently tried to evade identification by turning away his face.
The policemen,Narayan Warang, now posted in Buldhana,is the 27th witness to be examined by the prosecution in the Mumbai terror attack case.
Warang said that at the time of the encounter with Kasab and the terrorist accompanying him,Abu Ismail Khan,he was posted at Chowpatty beat chowky. He said he was called by his seniors from D B Marg police station to escort Kasab and Abu Ismail Khan who was injured in the encounter and died before he could be given admitted to the hospital to the B Y L Nair hospital.
Warang told the court that he had heard the accused telling doctors at the trauma ward that his name was Ajmal Amir Kasab. Warang said that he also sealed the clothes of the Kasab and the slain Khan.
Warang said that from the cargo trousers of Khan,he recovered a map with spots like CST,Malabar Hill and J J Bridge marked.
The prosecution has alleged that co-accused Fahim Ansari and Sabahuddin Ahmed had given the maps to the LeT bosses in Pakistan and that the maps were to help the terrorists reach their targets.
Kasab and Khan, who had opened fire at CST and later hijacked a car near Vidhan Bhavan, were apprehended by D B Marg police at a nakabandi in Chowpatty.
In the encounter,Khan sustained bullet injuries and died before he was admitted to the hospital.
Kasab suffered minor injuries and was arrested.
Warang also identified the clothes worn by the accused on the day of his capture. He also identified the fake identity cards recovered from terrorist.
Notes from The courtroom
Kasab hides face
Kasab, normally attentive to the proceedings, displayed disinterest. He even tried to evade identification by a witness by turning his face away. The court told him to show his face to the witness and Kasab, raised his head slowly, stood up in the dock and smiled at the witness who said,”This is the man I had taken to hospital.”
Tense witness
Noticing that API Narayan Warang looked very tense during his deposition, the court said: “Mumbai police are daredevils, but you seem to have lost it (courage) after being transferred to Buldhana. Don’t fumble. Depose only the truth and don’t judge whether what you say will have any bearing on the outcome of the case.”
