  • Delhi metro mishap
The site where a partially built bridge, part of the city's new metro rail system, collapsed in New Delhi.

In the second mishap in as many days, six persons were injured on Monday when cranes carrying out debris clearance operation at the site of the metro accident collapsed.

The incident comes a day after six persons were killed when an under-construction bridge of the Delhi Metro gave way at South Delhi's Jamrudpur.

Metro authorities said the crane mishap was caused due to a mechanical fault and that heavier cranes would be used from now on.

Metro chief E Sreedharan, who had resigned on Sunday taking moral responsibility for the accident, reached the site for the second time in the day following the mishap which occurred at around noon.

Doctors at the AIIMS trauma centre said six persons were brought to the hospital from the accident site with minor injuries.

However, DMRC officials said no one was hurt.

Four cranes were launching the girder when one of them malfunctioned apparently leading to the transfer of load to the others.

The officials said the crane operators miscalculated the weight of the launcher and this led to the accident.

Police has cordoned off the site.

The launcher also collapsed along with the two cranes when its wires snapped, eyewitnesses said.

Workers carrying the clearance operations were seen running to safety when the cranes came down.

MISHAPS ARE CAUSED DUE TO CORRUPTION?By: B S GANESH, BANGALORE | 15-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward In my opinion of 70 years of experience of seeing most mishaps in our country, I feel they are all caused due to corruption oriented working of using sub-standard material or deficiency of meeting rigid specification. Even in Bangalore we have seen many cases of failure and cuprits escape.B S Ganesh, ganshar@dataone.in 70/9 Basappa Layout, Hanumanthnagar, BANGALORE 560 019
No place for honest N dedicated person in BharathBy: R S Patil | 14-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward E Sreedharan Metro icon had strongly opposed the concept of leveraging a land bank to finance the Hyderabad metro project. He had warned that this model would erupt into a full-fledged political scandal. CM subsequently dismissed him. This is the reward for a honest beurocrat who has dedicated his service to the nation even at the age of 77. CM encouraged maytas group and awarded contracts worth 80000 crores. Raju could even change the alignment of metro to go thru the properties owned by him and CM family.Further Sredharan has been humiliated by UPA govt in his pension case. This country, this govt and people of Delhi do not deserve Sreedharan.
effect of age on performanceBy: subbarao | 14-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Dear Sir: The law of nature is that all cells dies as aging process. Lata Mangeskar was singing beautifully at her prime age. She stopped singing at old age. Old age limits the ability of people what they were able to perform beter at younger age, Mr. Sreedharan is over seventy. As a physician, I can say that old age imposes limits on functional ability of the brain. Our epic Mahabharatha gave a message to us saying that when a old man Bhisma was incahrage of the affairs it ended up in a disaster. Mr. Gandhi took decisions at old age which became detrimental to our nation later as seen today. Because of cortical atrophy or plaque old brains cannot function as efficiently as their younger brain and they have to undergo CT of Brain or MRI before taking up a job. Mr. Sreedharan's decision to resign was correct. To withdraw later like Advani was wrong because old age causes the brain to function in an ineffective or suboptimal manner. This principle also applies to Mr. Manmohan Singh.
Corruption from Top to bottomBy: Dodo | 14-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Indians should learn few lessons from Canadians. Toronto Transit commission runs over 50 years old subway lines throughout Greater Toronto Area with no mishaps. Delhi metro must be less than ten year and look at it. They should go back to bullock carts. Thats they will be more environment friendly and save the planet.Lesser carbon foot prints. lol
