Emmanuel Amolik is yet another trigger-happy encounter specialist who finds himself on the wrong side of the law with allegations of close links to Dawood Ibrahim.
In January 2003, he was arrested by CID for allegedly murdering a suspected gangster in an alleged fake encounter in Ulhasnagar in 1992.
On February 21, 1992, a police team comprising Amolik, then an assistant inspector, and inspector Ramvilas Tripathi of Central Police Station, Ulhasnagar, shot Baban Koyande, an alleged shooter of the Gopal Rajwani gang, near Sapna Garden in Ulhasnagar.
After investigating officer inspector Vilas Jadhav of CID was arrested for recording false information, the probe was handed over to another CID officer.
Subsequently, Amolik, Tripathi and four constables were booked for murder.
Amolik was suspended but the suspension was revoked after the prosecution failed to secure conviction. He retired in 2011 from Mumbra, Thane.
A student of Wadia College in Pune, Amolik joined police service in 1978 at 25.
At the time dons Karim Lala and Dilip Aziz, operating in Mohammad Ali, Dongri, Dawood Ibrahim in Nagpada and Chhota Rajan mentor Bada Rajan of Tilak Nagar were vying for supremacy in Mumbai underworld.
Amolik was first posted at Azad Maidan Police Station and gunned down criminal Majeed of Dongri in 1981. This was one of first recorded encounters in Mumbai. His next encounter was that of robber Nair in Bandra.
In his career, Amolik claimed over a dozen scalps. However, he shot to fame when he killed hitman Chandrashekar Safalika, hired by hotelier Mahesh Dholakia, who shot Bada Rajan at Esplanade Court masquerading as a naval cadet on September 21, 1983. Safalika was arrested but escape from jail. A year later, Amolik shot him in Santacruz.
His next encounter was of gangster Manat Khan, a Dawood rival.
