The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), probing the sex scandal in Jammu and Kashmir, has taken one more teenager into protective custody after her name was revealed by other victims.
The victim, sources told The Indian Express, had also been allegedly exploited by some politicians and police officials. Her custody has taken the number of girls questioned so far to ‘‘a little over twenty’’.
The victim, being ‘‘sought by CBI for a long time’’, was picked up from a downtown locality in Srinagar. The girl, sources said, has named some more victims and accused. This has widened the web of the case which, sources said, in its extent had ‘‘already breached the frontiers of the state’’.
The CBI, the sources said, was also in search of a lady doctor who had been performing abortions on the victims. There have been raids on her house, but the woman continues to elude arrest.
Meanwhile, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Srinagar, today posted for hearing the bail applications of the seven accused to July 7. The applicants are former J-K minister Ghulam Ahmad Mir, senior IAS officer Iqbal Khandey, Deputy Inspector General of BSF K S Padhi, Deputy Superintendent of Police Ashraf Mir, Shabir Langoo and Mehraj Din Malik, both alleged middlemen in the racket. On the next hearing, they will be personally present in the court.
J-K High Court on Monday gave the go ahead to Chief Judicial Magistrate, Srinagar, ‘‘to dispose of bail applications before him in accordance with the law”. The order, legal experts told The Indian Express, has given the authority to the CJM to either ‘‘grant or reject” the bail of the accused. The CJM also extended the remand of Shabir Langoo and Ashraf Mir by another four days. Khandey’s son, Sajid Khandey, who was present in the court pleaded that CBI had not revealed the charges framed against his father. ‘‘Although five days have elapsed after the arrest of my father, we don’t know what his fault is,” Sajid pleaded. ‘‘CBI has not disclosed the charges slapped on him (Iqbal Khandey).’’
