The 12 persons arrested for allegedly beating 17-year-old Ansh Agarwal to death in Andheri (East) on Tuesday night were produced before a court on Thursday. As two of them are minors, they have been sent to a remand home while the rest have been remanded in police custody till April 25. The police have also recovered the weapons used in the crime, including a paver block that was allegedly used to hit Agarwal. Meanwhile,Anshs kin claim that he had tried to stop one of the accused from sending lewd messages to a common friend, which may have led to his murder.
The police have, meanwhile, named a few of them as the main accused in the case. With the police going by the version that there was a fight between Ansh and one of the boys,Agarwals friends and family allege that there is more to the murder. The allege that the person who dealt the fatal blow with the paver block was not the one with whom Ansh had an argument initially.
According to a family friend,a girl, who was a common friend of Ansh and the boy,had approached him after she started getting lewd messages on her phone and through a social network site from a boy in the locality. She had approached the police with a complaint on the matter last week, and informed Ansh about it as well, said the friend. Ansh sent the boy a text message, asking him to stop sending such messages to the girl. The boy then asked Ansh to meet him outside a college in the locality, the friend added.
Ansh, according to the family friend, had thought over the idea and decided to meet the boy. On Tuesday evening,he met the boy-who is now the main accused. The boy was accompanied by a few others from Poonam Nagar, the friend said. An argument broke out and the boy slapped Ansh, the friend alleged.
When Ansh returned home,he messaged the boy to end the matter, and apologized for having entered into an argument, said Agarwals friend. He,however, left again. According to Anshs friends, some boys later picked up Anshs brother from his house and took him to the spot where Ansh was being beaten up.
We are yet to begin our interrogation as we are collecting evidence. We will look into all angles on the case, said senior inspector Suresh Hujband from MIDC police station.
The incident took place near the Kohinoor Hotel next to the HDFC Bank on the Andheri-Kurla Road at 10:30 pm on Tuesday.
Ansh was a second-year junior college student at a college in Juhu, where most of the accused studied.
