Days after the UGC issued legally enforceable regulations to check ragging in colleges, replacing two decade-old guidelines which were advisory in nature, the government on Friday said it’s planning to put in place similar guidelines to prevent ragging in schools. Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal told the Rajya Sabha that regulations similar to the UGC rules should be enacted for schools and that the ministry has written to the Medical Council of India, Dental Council of India, Indian Nursing Council and the All India Council of Technical Education to adopt the UGC regulations against ragging. He added that the anti-ragging helpline received over 15,000 calls within a week, but majority of them were from those who wanted to check whether the system was working. “The helpline received 15,226 queries, only 77 were real complaints,” he said.
