Along with the Beggar Home, the city will get three more homes for the underprivileged.
Inderpreet Kaur, District Social Security Officer, said, “Along with beggars home, the state government will also open an old age home, home for mentally retarded and district disability rehabilitation centre at the earliest. In a meeting with NGOs, we made everyone aware about it, so that they may come forward with their projects about these homes in the near future.”
On September 9, the state government had announced to open a beggar home at Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar. At each of these beggar homes, 50 people would be provided shelter.
The District Social Security Officer said, “We wrote letters to more than 30 non-governmental organisations to come forward to run such homes in coordination with the state government. We got an overwhelming response. In the next meeting, a selection committee headed by Assistant Deputy Commissioner (Development) Ludhiana will decide as to which NGO would be given the work of constructing a beggars’ home. We hope it will be finalised by the November-end.”
The officer said, “The beggar homes will not only provide shelter to the beggars but also make them good human beings. There will be proper schooling and vocational training for them so that they become capable of earning their livelihood. “
Punjab’s lone beggar home is being run by Department of Social Security at Kapurthala. It came into existence in 1947.
