The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to grant relief to spiritual leader Asaram Bapu, seeking restraint on the Gujarat Police from taking any coercive steps against him in an attempt to murder complaint.
A Division Bench led by Justice Altamas Kabir dismissed the application.
Asaram and two others were charged with conspiracy and attempt to murder following a complaint by one Raju Chandak,a former follower of Asaram who was shot at by two unidentified persons in the Ramnagar locality of Sabarmati on December 5.
The police have made Asaram the prime accused behind the shooting based on the statement given by Chandak.
Asaram has countered the allegation saying that
he was delivering a religious discourse in New Delhi at the time of the alleged attack.
Chandak had testified against Asaram before the D K Trivedi Commission, probing the mysterious deaths of two Ashram boys,Dipesh and Abhishek Vaghela.
Asaram had courted controversy in July 2008,when the two boys were found dead under mysterious circumstances, leading to altercations between angry locals and Asarams followers.
