The 425 Tibetan delegates participating in a special meeting convened in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, have appealed to the Kashag (council of ministers) of the exiled Tibetan government to make efforts for the visit of spiritual leader Dalai Lama to Tibet. A resolution was passed to this effect on Thursday.
Tibetans from across the world reached Dharamsala to hold a special four-day long meeting to discuss and formulate strategies to curb incidents of self-immolation by Tibetans in Tibet. The first such meeting was held in Dharamsala in 2008.
Karma Yeshi, a senior MP of the exiled Tibetan government, said: "It was one of the most important demands of Tibetans who ended their lives by immolating themselves in Tibet while protesting against Chinese atrocities. The Tibetans, inside Tibet, have been raising two major demands - that His Holiness Dalai Lama be allowed to visit Tibet, and freedom for Tibet. Being part of the exiled government, based in a free country like India, it becomes our duty to raise this demand and urge the International community to press China to allow Dalai Lama's visit to Tibet."
The hope for Dalai Lama's visit to Tibet seem far-fetched as the Chinese government suspended all talks with the exiled Tibetan government three years ago.
"Of course, there is not much of a possibility that China will allow the visit, but still it is our duty to raise such a demand and we shall continue to do so. China had previously been saying that since Dalai Lama is the political head of exiled Tibetans he cannot be allowed to visit Tibet, but now since he (Dalai Lama) is no longer the political head and is only a spiritual leader, there should be no problem for China to allow his visit to Tibet," Yeshi added.
