'Apple patent not related to core OS'

Reacting to Apple's US patent victory over Samsung, Google Inc has said the patent claims do not relate to the core Android operating system and that it does not want the lawsuit to 'limit' consumer's access to such devices.

Last Friday, technology giant Apple, in a massive victory in its patent case against Samsung, won more than USD 1 billion after a jury in California found that the South Korean firm violated Apple's patents related to the software and design of mobile devices.

In a statement, Google said: "The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims. Most of these don't relate to the core Android operating system and several are being re-examined by the US Patent Office".

Google further said that "the mobile industry is moving fast and all players, including newcomers, are building upon ideas that have been around for decades. We work with our partners to give consumers innovative and affordable products, and we don¿t want anything to limit that".

The judge has scheduled a September 20 hearing to discuss Apple's demands for a sales ban on some of Samsung's products from the US market.

According to analysts, the verdict has a bigger repercussion as the question remains whether Samsung and other Apple competitors will have to redesign their smartphones to avoid infringing Apple's patents.

Meanwhile, Bill Cox, marketing director for Microsoft's Windows Phone Division has tweeted that : "Windows Phone is looking good right now".
