It was more than 25 years ago when India’s first amusement park,Appu Ghar, was inaugurated. Less than four years ago it shut down, much to the chagrin of many children and adults. Now,there’s good news. Appu Ghar will be back next year, this time in Gurgaon.

The mood at the press conference announcing the comeback of Appu Ghar was nostalgic. While most in attendance shared their cherished memories of the amusement park,Gian Vijeshwar, chairman of IAL,the company that opened Appu Ghar in 1984,said,“Appu,the name,is enough to bring smiles on the faces of people across the country.”

To be constructed over an area of 58 acres, spread in Sectors 29 and 52A,the Rs 400 crore venture will have an amusement park, water park, shopping mall, sports club and a village-themed recreation centre.

Explaining the new state-of-the-art features,Robin Vijeshwar, managing director,IAL,said,“A giant Ferris wheel will be one of the crowd-pullers at the entertainment destination that will also have other thrilling rides and unique attractions such as theme-based go-karting,stunt shows and cartoon parades.” A wax museum is also on the cards. “The talks are still on. It is a long process,we have to get in touch with international artists and it involves a lot of paperwork,” said Gian Vijeshwar.
