  • Environmentalists unfortunately depend upon economists to prove their theories and axioms. One needs to recognise and understand the limitations of economic theories and statistics, which are very often based on certain assumptions that do not hold true at all times. Theories and logic should therefore go hand in hand. Further, one needs to question whether it is possible to quantify thousands of variables. Has empiricism diminished the value of economics?

    Jet, set, stop

Jet Airways’ striking pilots have once again caused great inconvenience to the public. It is preposterous that the pilots’ unions have allowed for such irresponsible behaviour because of trivial provocations from the airlines’ executives. Perhaps it would be wiser for the pilots to recognise the luxuries they are afforded, for instance accommodation at world-renowned hotels. What if these facilities were withdrawn? Would further strikes follow? Lastly, one should not forget that bus drivers provide a similar service yet their lives are extremely humble.

The satirical editorial ‘Dump the pilot’ has zoned in on the pilot strike issue aptly. One questions where the pilots’ sense of responsibility is? Given that their job consists of provision of services should pilots themselves not recognise the inconvenience they cause? The question that needs to be asked is, why has the aviation industry given into the pressures of the pilots?

    Well paid

One of the major bottlenecks that the country faces is the pay structure seen in government-controlled organisation. With reference to the pay commission, bureaucrats have the final say. This tends to under evaluation of other jobs. Given that the country has steadily developed, perhaps it is high time that job evaluation takes place. Given that the Goverdhan Mehta Committee recommendations are not markedly different from the pay structure now, it would do well if those concerned are paid based on quality of research and consultancy earnings of the faculty.

True DemocratBy: Mool Chand Gupta | 01-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward I was a lad of ten years when the country became independendt. One thing I respectfully remember about our first Prime Minister Shri Jawaharlal Nehru is that he was a true democrat and saw to it that the important pillars of democracy - Opposition, Media and Judiciary have proper say and place in the country's democratic set up and play their important roles. Second, I remember that how peacefully public was listening to his Independece speeches from the Red Fort without the present day hullaballo of security these days. Present leaders, belonging to the same political party can take lesson from him if not from the life and deeds of the other true martyrs of this country.pi
MIND STUFFBy: MOOL CHAND GUPTA | 27-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Present day leaders have all conveniently and selfishly forgotten the contribution of the freedom fighters who enabled them to roll in wealth. If the public has to be served sincerely old good type of people are required. The need of the hour is that the mind stuff of the present leaders is adjudged properly. When a leader has said he is paying for himself for the luxurious life style and considered the economy class in the aeroplanes as cattle class, such leaders may not rate the 'AAm AADMI" more than flies, inects and mosquitoes. Can such leaders guide the destiny of this country? With their wealthy exuberance leaders with such mind stuff should quit and should not be allowed to make a mockery of our martyrs.
MODERN BLIND FAITHSBy: Mool Chand Gupta | 20-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Old blind faiths based on illieracy are sufacing again with increasing astrological emphasis with a big bang on TV programmes. The point of worry is modern blind faiths are affecting mostly the young and growing young female population of even educated population . The magic of the beauty products shown on the TV is predicting glamourous life style as if every female will reach the contest and is going to become the heartthrobe for the nation and world wide. A precaution will be in the interest of these young females and their parents.
Austerity TalkBy: Mool Chand Gupta | 18-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward It makes a mockery of the whole political system that the ruling party has started talks taking credit for the austerity measures it is asking its members to follow. At first, they should penalize the members who have not only lost path but forgotten the struggle for independence. They conveniently have not committed to thier memory the devotion and the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters.Present day politicians have forgotten the past and do not car for the "National Honour" today. National character is just suffering because of the deeds of the present day leaders. As they have failed to be examplary in behaviour before the masses
chlidren and parentsBy: r.kapoor and suraj kapoor | 11-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward It is indeed a difficult phase in most parents’ lives to deal with their offsprings when they are on the threshold of adolescence. The child’s could-not-care-less attitude is a major cause for concern, for they detest parental advice and guidance. ‘It’s my life, let me lead it the way I want to’ seems to be their motto which becomes a cause of concern for the parents. But then there is a solution for every problem. If parents recall their teen aches and pains, adopt a broad-minded attitude, listen to their kid’s grievances, keep the doors of communication open, and most importantly, allow them to learn from their mistakes without harbouring too many expectations, then the so-called generation gap can be bridged and the bond between the parents and children made strongersuraj kapoor and r.kapoorsolan h.p.173212
