ARAI PhD course in auto tech to kick off in June

In a bid to help raise manpower for the automotive industry, the Automotive Research Association of India ( ARAI) is for the first time starting a PhD programme in automotive technology. The ARAI Academy for Educational Programmes will run these courses next year and has started the hunt for faculty.

According to officials, the PhD programme in five disciplines of automotive technology—emission, engine, safety, electronics, noise and vibration—will start in June next year and the process has been initiated. Officials said the written test and interview for the course will start in January and will continue upto March. ARAI is looking for faculty to run the Phd programme in collaboration with VIT, Vellore.

Dr Kemal Vora, Deputy Director and head ARAI academy said ARAI is looking at hiring faculty for the Phd programme.

"Initially we will hire three faculty members for the Phd programme and we will begin the course by June 15, 2013. We plan to admit 10 students in the first year," he said.

ARAI academy has already been running BTech and MTech courses in association with the College of Engineering Pune (COEP) and Vel Tech University, Chennai. Vora said the PhD course has been started as there is lot of interest in research in the field of automotive technology. "There are a lot of patents which have been filed and we have designed the course in a way that people should be able to choose both part-time and the full-time courses," he said.

ARAI officials said that through the MTech and BTech course of the institute hone skills of engineers and provides them with "in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge to meet the needs of modern automotive engineering".

For the last eight years ARAI has been running MTech and BTech courses in different disciplines of automotive technology and students have got placements in companies like Ashok Leyland, Bosch Chassis Systems, Cummins, Eaton, Eicher Tractors, Emitec, Escorts, Force Motors, GE Transport and General Motors.
