In an armed dacoity, four to five masked men on Friday took away gold and silver ornaments besides cash -totalling Rs 20 lakh — from a jewellery shop at Budhwar Peth on Laxmi Road, police said.
There were no CCTV cameras at the shop P R Jewellers located on the first floor of an old building at 859, Budhwar Peth at Vijay Maruti Chowk, police said adding that the robbers entered the shop carrying firearms at around 8 pm, when only three persons, two of them owners of the shop, were present.
Two of them gagged owners Rajesh Sampat Porwal (62), Padmaraj Sampat Porwal (46) and their employee Rahu Bendre and tied their hands, even as the others threatened them with guns.
After they left with the booty, one of the three managed to extricate himself, come to down to the ground floor and raise the alarm.
Immediately after the incident was reported senior police officers including Pune police commissioner Gulabrao Pol and top crime branch officers visited the spot.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rajesh Bansode said, "There are no CCTV cameras at the shop. Crime branch teams have been pressed into action. More details will come to the fore as we record statements."
