Army orders probe into alleged assault on woman officer

The Army has ordered a Court of Inquiry after a woman officer alleged that she was assaulted by two of her male colleagues.

The Army has ordered a Court of Inquiry after a woman officer alleged that she was assaulted by two of her male colleagues. The Court of Inquiry is being conducted by the Commanding Officer of 142 Light Air Defence Regiment at Chandimandir,near Chandigarh.

The incident took place in June this year and a Court of Inquiry was ordered on September 8.

“The Court of Inquiry is on and we shall be sharing the details officially when the inquiry gets over,” Brigadier Raj Kumar,BGS (Intelligence,Western Command),said.

The inquiry was ordered after Lt Shivani Chib of the Judge Advocate General Branch alleged that she was assaulted by two officers—Major Abhijit Dutt of the Military Intelligence and Lt Col R S Punia,staff officer to Director General Resettlement in New Delhi—in the residential area of Western Command headquarters.

Shivani alleged that seeing the two officers following her,she took refuge in Lt Col Raj Mohan’s house. Lt Col Raj Mohan is an administrative officer in Western Command headquarters.

Sources in Western Command said Shivani has alleged that the two officers followed her into Lt Col Raj Mohan’s house and assaulted her,leading to a brawl in which the military police had to intervene. However,both the officers have denied the charges.

The Court of Inquiry is expected to conclude within a month.

Shivani was relieved of her Short Service Commission charge on August 31.
