Army sends retirement warning letter to Gen Singh

Even as reports of uncertainty on the retirement date of outgoing Army chief General V K Singh hang in the air,the Defence Ministry is clear that the officer will retire on May 31

Even as reports of uncertainty on the retirement date of outgoing Army chief General V K Singh hang in the air,the Defence Ministry is clear that the officer will retire on May 31. Official sources have said that the ministry has got confirmation from the Military Secretary (MS) branch of the Army that a retirement warning letter, intimating Gen Singh about the end of his tenure, has been issued.

When asked if the Army Chief’s office has accepted the letter, the Army HQ refused to comment. However, sources said that following the issuance of a retirement warning letter (RWL),processes are under way to calculate and disburse his pension, gratuity and other benefits.

While the RWL is generally issued six months prior to the retirement date of the officer,in Gen Singh’s case it was issued late because of complications arising out of the age controversy. The letter was issued on February 28,three days before the announcement that Lt Gen Bikram Singh will take over as the next Army chief.

The RWL,which was issued by the MS branch, has been sent to 20 departments within the ministry and the Armed Forces. As per the process, this is followed by a formal retirement notice to the concerned officer. However,in Gen V K Singh’s case, the retirement notice is yet to be issued.
