The Army will be taken off the streets of Srinagar in a day or two,as the Centre had agreed to keep it there only until Tuesdays Idgah chalo protest rally to ensure that no untoward incident happens.
The withdrawal schedule has the concurrence of J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who was told at the time of so-called deployment that it would not be prudent to parade the Army for a fortnight.
At best, the Centre was willing to permit the Army to conduct convoy movement on the periphery of the Capital for a week, with a warning to Omar that any timeline beyond that could have a fatal fallout on the democratic process underway in the strife-torn state. The Army,he was warned, has a different mandate and an aggressive modus operandi that could lead to more deaths in the event of protests.
Omar has already indicated that the Army could go back after Tuesdays rally. We are keeping the option available until the 13th when they (the separatists) have called an Idgah chalo protest march. We will review the decision again, he said.
