The Army will be taken off the streets of Srinagar in a “day or two”,as the Centre had agreed to keep it there only until Tuesday’s Idgah chalo protest rally to ensure that no untoward incident happens.

The withdrawal schedule has the concurrence of J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who was told at the time of so-called “deployment” that it would not be prudent to parade the Army for a fortnight.

At best, the Centre was willing to permit the Army to conduct “convoy movement on the periphery” of the Capital for a week, with a warning to Omar that any timeline beyond that could have a “fatal fallout” on the democratic process underway in the strife-torn state. The Army,he was warned, has a different mandate and an aggressive modus operandi that could lead to more deaths in the event of protests.

Omar has already indicated that the Army could go back after Tuesday’s rally. “We are keeping the option available until the 13th when they (the separatists) have called an Idgah chalo protest march. We will review the decision again,” he said.
