An elderly couple and a Delhi University (DU) student were among the four killed when an Army truck crashed into a bus stop at Satya Niketan,South Delhi,on Sunday. Two persons were injured in the accident.
Police said the truck driver,Pooran Singh,first hit a DTC bus,then an auto-rickshaw and finally rammed into the bus stand around 11.30 am. Singh has been arrested. The area was crowded and four people were killed in the accident, said a senior police officer.
Three of the victims were identified as Jaspreet Kaur,a second-year student of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College,and Ramcharan Pokhrial (64) and his wife Kalteshwari (60),who are residents of West Delhis Paschim Vihar area. The fourth victim is yet to be identified.
Police said while the couple died immediately,Kaur and the fourth victim succumbed to injuries at Safdarjung Hospital.
The Pokhrials were on way to meet a relative in RK Puram,and were waiting for a bus at the stand.
They left Paschim Vihar in the morning. They were waiting for a bus at Satya Niketan when the truck rammed into them. They died before they could be brought to the hospital, said Parvesh Dhoudiyal,a relative. The couple is survived by their son,daughter-in-law and two daughters.
Police plan to go for a mechanical inspection of the vehicle to ascertain the cause of the accident.
The Army truck driver told us that he lost control of his vehicle after hitting the DTC bus. We are conducting investigations to establish the exact cause of the accident. He was arrested from the spot, said H G S Dhaliwal,Additional Commissioner of Police (South).
A medical examination confirmed that Singh was not under the influence of alcohol.
A case of rash and negligent driving and death due to negligence has been registered at the Dhaula Kuan police station.
