Abhaya: Father seeks probe into ex-judge visit to lab
KOCHI: The father of Abhaya, a nun who died under mysterious circumstances in 1992 in a Kerala convent, has urged Supreme Court Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan to conduct an in-house inquiry into the visit of Justice Cyriac Joseph to the Forensic Science Laboratory in Bangalore while a crucial narco test of three accused in the case was in progress in 2008. In a complaint to the CJI, Abhaya’s father M Thomas has stated that Justice Cyriac, a former chief justice of the Karnataka High Court, had visited the laboratory when the test was in progress on the accused —Father Thomas Kottoor, Father Jose Puthrikayil and Sister Sephy.
Jailbreak bid foiled, undertrial shot at
TURA: Guards at Tura district jail in Meghalaya opened fire at prisoners, injuring one of the undertrials who along with 15 others made an attempt to flee on Saturday afternoon. The prisoners attacked wardens and after overpowering them made an attempt to flee by climbing the wall of the jail. However, security guards rushed to the spot and fired one round, ADM Ambrose Marak said. One of the prisoners, Gamseng Sangma, was hit on the leg as others ran back to their barracks in fear, he said, adding that a warden also suffered injuries.
UP: DM orders FIR against 127 schools
ETAH: The District Magistrate of Etah in Uttar Pradesh has ordered that an FIR be filed against directors of 127 schools for alleged fake accreditation and registration. Acting on an inquiry conducted by Additional District Magistrate Akhilesh Mishra that the schools were running illegally and the directors had allegedly used fake papers for land ownership and property transfer, DM Gaurav Dayal passed the order. The directors have alleged that the action is one-sided and the facts have not been verified.
