Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Sunday demanded the immediate arrest of the four officers who had allegedly tried to break up Priyanka Todi and Rizwanur Rehman’s marriage.

Speaking at a rally attended by Rizwanur’s mother and brother, Mamata alleged that the West Bengal Government was shielding the officials.

She also announced a statewide movement to ensure that the Rehman family gets justice.

Banerjee also lambasted the state Government for shielding the guilty and said minorities were being oppressed in the state, be it in Nandigram or in Kolkata.

“The CPI(M)-led Government has failed to deliver justice. I am saddened by the CBI report, which stated that Rizwanur committed suicide. We all believe that he was murdered,” she said.

“How can the names of Prasun Mukherjee and Gyanwant Singh be dropped? We demand that the guilty police officers and the members of the Todi family be arrested immediately. If not, we will initiate a statewide agitation. We have the support of Rizwanur’s family and will help them get justice,” Banerjee added.

“When Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee met me, he promised that I will get justice. Now his Government is protecting the police officers who are responsible for my son’s death. I still believe that my son did not commit suicide. Therefore, I have come out on the streets with Mamatadi to demand justice,” said Rizwanur’s mother Kishwar Jehan.

Rizwanur’s brother Rukbanur said, “We are still hopeful that the guilty will be punished and we will go to any length to ensure that. Strangely, names of officers like Gyanwant Singh have been dropped from the list of accused….The Government is protecting the guilty. We will march and support anyone if they help us to get justice.”
