After five years of confinement, two juveniles — now adults arrested under the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) in 2004 for the Godhra train carnage, were released on bail on Monday by a local juvenile court in Godhra.
According to Yusuf Charkha, the counsel for Anwar Abdulla Kalandar, 22 and Mohammed Shakir Kadir Pataliya, 21, the duo had moved to the juvenile remand home in Godhra last month.
“On Monday, both Kalandar and Pataliya were allowed to go home by the remand home after the order came from the Judicial Magistrate for Juvenile Court, J P Gadhvi,” said Charkha.
He added that when Kalandar and Pataliya were arrested by the Godhra Town Police in 2004, they were 17 and 16 years old respectively.
It was after the Juvenile Justice Board conducted an enquiry into the matter in April 2009, the accused were reportedly sent to a remand home in Godhra for reformation.
Before this, they were at a remand home at Khanpur in Ahmedabad, after their release from the Sabarmati Central Jail.
Three other juveniles who were arrested and later released in March 2003 include Hassan Taiyab Iqbal (17), Firoz Sikandar Khan (15) and Hasan Wahid Khan Pathan (15).
