Arrested brother of Tripura Congress chief Sudip Roy Burman released

Assam Rifles personnel raided his brick kiln yesterday and handed Sandeep Burman over to the Jirania police station on the charge that he illegally possessed a revolver, Bangladeshi Taka 1500 and some extortion notices of the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura.

However, Sandip Burman refuted the charge, saying that he was framed and alleged that it was a conspiracy hatched by the ruling CPI-M.

The police said it had released Sandeep Burman on bail because the charge brought against him by the Assam Rifles was 'weak'.

Sudip Roy Barman told reporters, "It is a conspiracy by the Tripura government to tarnish his image and that of his family."

However, the ruling CPI(M) denied that it had hatched a conspiracy to arrest the brother of the Congress' state president.

Addressing a press conference, CPI(M) state secretary Bijan Dhar said, "We have demanded an inquiry and punishment of the guilty. We oppose the charge that our party had hatched a conspiracy to arrest him."

Dhar alleged that the arrest had something to do with Sandip Burman's quarrel with an Army colonel who was posted in Assam Rifles on Deputation and was allegedly manhandled by Burman on July 27.

The incident occurred in a private telecom company outlet on July 27 when the colonel protested against arbitrary billing.

An Army press release issued here on October 16 had said that General Officer Commanding of Dimapur-based 3 Corps, AK Sahni, met the state chief minister and sought action against the assaulter.

CPI-M demands Cong president's brother's rearrest

Agartala: The incident of arrest of Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee president Sudip Roy Burman's brother Sandeep Roy Burman and subsequent release by police takes a curious turn when the ruling CPI-M today demanded his re-arrest on the charge of his involvement with insurgents.

"The police released him because a mob had circled the Jirania police station and threw stones for hours," CPI-M spokesperson Gautam Das told a press conference here.

Das said that CPI-M had long been "crying" that Congress was trying to use insurgents in the elections and they forged an alliance with such a force which is the over ground mask of NLFT insurgents.

Tripura CPI-M Secretary Bijan Dhar today wrote a letter to Chief Election Commissioner stating that it was unbelievable that without the knowledge of the brick kiln owner Sandip Roy Burman anybody could gather arms or extortion notice of NLFT in his kiln.

Dhar requested ECI to rearrest Sandip and conduct a proper inquiry for the interest of free Assembly election in Tripura on February 14.

Sandip was held by Assam Rifles from his brick field at Champaknagar, about 30 km from here yesterday and was released last night itself on bail because the charge brought against him by Assam Rifles was 'weak'.

However, Sandip Burman refuted the charge, saying that he was framed and alleged that it was a conspiracy hatched by the ruling CPI-M.
