One of the three Tanzanians, Gujuali Haronali, arrested on August 8 for alleged involvement in drug peddling, supplied cocaine to pubs in Mumbai, Pune and Goa, said officials from the Anti Narcotics Cell. Haronali was arrested with two others —Hanida Sharifu Hamadi and Nadiri Midu Lingi— for possessing 20 gms of cocaine on Friday night.
An official from the ANC said requesting anonymity, “It has come to our attention that clubs in Mumbai, Goa and Pune have become hubs for sale and consumption of drugs and we have therefore compiled a list of the suspected clubs.” When asked about whether the management in pubs are aware of consumption of drugs on their premises, the official said, “In most cases, they are aware but turn a blind eye. If we come across any evidence pointing to the involvement of any management staff, we will take action against them too.”
Police Inspector Mrityunjay Hiremath from the Bandra ANC unit said, “The cocaine found in the possession of the Tanzanians was of the highest quality which is generally in demand by the party goers. Out of the three accused, Haronali was earlier convicted for drug peddling. He had been released a couple of months ago after serving almost 3 years in jail. This time, we are going to request for the maximum punishment,” said Hiremath.
In July 2009, a squad of ANC sleuths had conducted a raid near a popular pub in Juhu and had arrested four youths for possession of narcotics.
