Arsenal will play the first domestic soccer final of the year without stars Thierry Henry, Jens Lehmann and Gilberto — just the way Arsene Wenger wants it.
The Gunners’ manager has used a youthful second team throughout all rounds of the League Cup and sees no reason to change his lineup for Sunday’s final. “Not the slightest temptation,” Wenger said of changing his selection policy.
The League Cup was the first trophy won by Jose Mourinho as Chelsea manager, in 2005, and is one of four trophies the Blues are in contention this season.
“It is not the main target for us, and I believe it is not the main target for Arsenal. So I believe it is a final that has conditions to be less emotional and more quality,” Mourinho said.
While Chelsea will likely field their strongest side, except for injured John Terry, Wenger may stick with the likes of Theo Walcott and Jeremie Aliadiere and midfielders Denilson and Julio Baptista.
Wenger compared his young squad to the reality television show The X-Factor, where unknowns bid for a singing contract.
“People who turn up and are ready to fight for something, like our young players are, I like,” Wenger said. “It’s the X-Factor Academy.”
