As Azam urges Mulayam to crack the whip on bureaucrats, latter says transfers soon

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Azam Khan on Wednesday criticised the bureaucracy, and asked Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav to shed his magnanimity and wield the whip.

Khan said that the whip was necessary because the officials are only concerned about their posting and transfer. "At Kumbh, the work is being done with the whip," said Khan who, since he is also Urban Development Minister, is handling arrangements for the Mela.

The SP president, meanwhile, remarked that an "overhaul" was necessary and a list of transfers would be issued soon.

Both leaders were interacting with party workers who flooded them with complaints that administrative and police officials paid no attention to their grievances.

Yadav told them: "You all have complaints, but we have deputed ministers for redressal of your grievances. Even today two ministers — S P Yadav and Narendra Verma — took your applications. Now, if we act tough on officials, some of you come in their support."

Admonishing the partymen, Yadav said that they change their opinion if an officer visits their home. "If the officer salutes a party leader, the leader quickly changes his opinion. Then, the leader approaches us for scrapping the transfer orders, it is very embarrassing," he added.

He asked party workers

not to intervene in transfers of officials and things will be settled. "Allow us to do it and do not interfere. If something wrong is done, inform us later," Yadav said.

Khan interrupted saying that he had received a letter from an MLA mentioning that a particular officer was working against partyline. When action was taken against him, he got another letter from the same MLA stating that the officer is just and upright.

At the same time, Khan urged Yadav to shed his magnanimity and wield the whip on the bureaucracy, which was only interested in transfers and postings.
