‘As I was picking up my car key, he pointed the gun to my forehead’

“Gaadi Se Bahar Niklo and Chaabi de do” are the two lines that the 26-year old Siddharth (name changed to protect identity) will probably never forget. These were the orders given by the two terrorists who carjacked his Skoda Laura on Wednesday night.

Siddharth and two friends were going to the Oberoi hotel to check on a friend who had been evacuated after reports of firing. “As the road to Oberoi through the Marine Drive was closed by the police, we went through the road near Mittal Chambers. There we saw a police vehicle coming from the opposite side. They yelled from the vehicle asking us to stop… It was when they opened my car door and pulled me out that I realised that they were not cops,” recalled Siddharth, who helps his father at their restaurant in Andheri.

Siddharth said the two terrorists were carrying weapons, backpacks and wore jackets. Siddharth said that after he was pulled out of the car, he and his friends started running. “Our initial reaction was to run as fast as possible. After we ran a few metres, the terrorist in the driver’s seat realised I had the key and one of them fired in the air and asked for the key,” he said.

Siddharth and his two friends were almost certain that they would be killed once they started running. Siddharth added that he was called by the terrorist sitting next to the driver to pick up the key that he had thrown. “The key fell near the boot of the car and he asked me to pick it up. As I was picking it up, he pointed the automatic weapon to my forehead… but thankfully he turned and sat in the car,” he said.

The terrorists headed towards the Oberoi and passed them on the same road 10 minutes later. “By that time the police had come to the spot…we were giving them information about the terrorists and one of my friends spotted the car,” he said.

It was at midnight that the officers of the D B Marg police were informed about a silver Skoda Laura approaching Chowpatty from Nariman Point. After a fierce gunbattle, one gunman was killed and the other arrested.
