Sonia Gandhi’s membership card: 10 days, no more

Following the spate of recent allegations and counter-allegations, the Press Club of India woke up to a rude shock on Tuesday morning: Congress president Sonia Gandhi had given up her honorary membership of the club.

A letter from AICC general secretary and spokesperson Janardan Dwivedi clarified matters: “In view of the ongoing controversy in the Press Club, Congress president Sonia Gandhi is giving up her honorary membership with immediate effect.” Enclosed with the letter was the membership card presented to Sonia Gandhi just 10 days ago.

While some members said it was unexpected, given the events of the last few days it is hardly surprising.

On August 21, a delegation from the then general body of Press Club was “granted an audience” with Gandhi. But even as the delegation was informing the Congress chief about the Press Club’s various “achievements” and its designs for a proposed new building, an uprising of sorts was underway at the club.

A “group of dissidents” from within the general body called for an extraordinary general body meeting (EGM) the next day — August 22. Their motive, one of the dissidents, Nadim Kazmi, said, was to “highlight the autocratic behaviour of the present general secretary and bring to light financial irregularities in Press Club’s accounts”.

Members arriving at the club for the EGM on August 22 morning were greeted by pictures of the delegation with Gandhi, as well as news that the Congress chief had accepted honorary membership of the club. “They were trying to use Sonia Gandhi as leverage — it was their masterstroke,” P P Balachandran, convener of the interim committee set up to manage the Press Club, said. “But their leadership was dissolved at the EGM and an interim committee was set up.”

Soniaji, ONLY ONE in politicsBy: Ramanna | 02-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Vaz(certainly your fake name,U R some BJP fellow), if you remember she denounced PM position just few years back and you won't find another example in the past, present or even in future in any part of world politics. In the contrary, just see how Advani is sticking to even as head of opposition, when he already declared that drama after their defeat. So mind well, Soniaji is above all and its good for the country if such a person is our MP.

Stay outBy: Hero Vaz | 02-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Sonia giving up her membership of the Press Club is not a shock; it is, in fact, a relief. She should keep out of places she is not fit to be in. Parliament is another place she should quit.

If you have nothing to crib about you start fighting with your selves. Is'nt it funny that be it Jinnah, babbar, gandhi, or any thing that walks on two three or four legs, you can always find faults with that.

Hon membership of Delhi press clubBy: k madhukar | 02-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward If she is honest as you claim she is, then she should have declined to accept honorary membership when it was offered .She did it only after there was contraversy. But for the contraversy, she would have retained the membership hoping to use the connection for biased reports in her and party's favour, then non-sychophantic public would have called her a cunning fox. This lady declined position of PM in the past, only when she saw a bigger contraversy was brewing.Let us not see virtue where none exists. Now less said the better about neutrality of our press.
