Asian telecom giants firing the first salvo in the battle for the smartphone market

Barcelona,the host of the world’s largest mobile communications technology conference,Mobile World Congress (MWC),has witnessed Asian telecommunications giants firing the first salvo in the battle for the smartphone market.

On Sunday,a day before the MWC formally opened in the Spanish city,China’s Huawei,South Korea’s LG and Taiwan’s HTC rolled out the world’s first quad core phones with twice the processing speed of the current generation of smartphones.

Huawei is touting its new Ascend D (49 per cent faster than its rivals) as the ‘world’s fastest smartphone’. The series is powered by Huawei’s K3V2 quad-core 1.2GHz/1.5GHz processor.

Unveiling the phone,Richard Yu,Chairman of Huawei Device,said that the Ascend D quad will feature noise cancelling technology for phone calls,called earSmart,that will be able to detect a user’s voice even in a crowded room. Running the latest version of Google Android,Ice Cream Sandwich,the device will,Yu said,be 20 per cent cheaper than its rivals and feature a higher resolution screen than the iPhone.

The Ascend D quad series will be available in China,Australia,Europe,Asia-Pacific,North and South America,and the Middle East in Q2 2012. The phone is planned for India launch in Q4 of 2012.

Huawei was joined by LG and HTC in announcing quad-core phones at Barcelona.

LG’s new flagship,the Optimus 4X HD,offers a 4G receiver for territories such as America where the technology is available.

HTC also announced new series of devices branded as One Family. To be launched worldwide in the second quarter of 2012,the One Family — One X,One S,and One V — is powered by Android 4.0 and will be targeting the super-phone segment of the smartphone market.

“The best moments in life are captured with a photo or remembered by a song,so it was key for the HTC One series to improve these emotional experiences,” said Peter Chou,CEO,HTC. It would be available in India through Bharti Airtel beginning April,2012.
