  • Noted Pakistani human rights activist Asma Jehangir’s daughter was “harassed” along with her colleagues by a group of armed men in Lahore while she was filming a footage of election posters.

Muneeza, whose mother Asma is the Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), is a reporter for Geo TV.

She and her team were shooting a footage of election posters in Lahore when the armed men surrounded them, beat up a team member, dragged girls and detained them in a politician’s election office, a statement issued by the Commission claimed.

The Commission denounced the “abduction and harassment” Muneeza and her team by the armed men.

The men also “misbehaved” with Asma Jehangir when she tried to get the group released. The men abused the girls and pointed their weapons at them and at Asma, the statement claimed.

The Commission called for the immediate disbandment of “vigilante squads maintained by the establishment”, as their interference with citizens was unlawful and could lead to chaos.

It said the culprits seemed to have the “patronage” of the authorities and were reportedly backed by a couple of police constables in uniform.

The Commission demanded that the matter must be investigated and the people involved should be punished.
