The University of Pune (UoP) is yet to take any action on a 2008 committee report that revealed malpractices in assessment of answersheets of engineering students. The report had pointed out that there were many cases in which over 300 papers were checked by an assessor in a day as opposed to the university guidelines that stipulate only 60 papers or 120 sections for an assessor in a day. It even revealed that a person had checked 664 papers a day at one of the assessment centres.
These irregularities were reported in the 2008 engineering examinations and the committee formed under the leadership of senior senate member Nandkumar Nikam to look into them had sent a detailed report on the four assessment centres to then vice-chancellor Narendra Jadhav. The details of the report came to light after senate member Atul Bagul filed a Right to Information (RTI) query on number of papers checked a day.
According to the report, there were a total of 132 assessors who checked 151 to 300 papers a day at the Sinhagad College of Engineering. There was also a case at the same centre where a person checked 664 papers a day, Bagul said.
UoP Controller of examinations SM Ahire, however, said the engineering examination papers were for 50 marks each. If a few people have exceeded the limit of papers checked,it must not have been done deliberately.
Bagul said one person checking over 300 papers a day was an injustice to students.
There might have been many students who got more than they deserved and some who did not get as much as they deserved. It is high time the university took some action against those involved in this.
