While last year it was Hindu College that received the maximum number of applications, this year Ramjas College has walked away with the crown.
With 99,500 applications, the college has the most number of students vying for its courses, beating all other colleges of Delhi University. Kirori Mal College, famous for having Big B on its alumni list, comes second with 98,500 while Hindu College comes third at 93,000. Hansraj College, very high on popularity charts received 92,500 applications while GTB Khalsa College received 85,500 applications.
However, the university has advised caution in calling the Ramjas college “most popular” college this year based on the numbers because the reasons for the increase in applicants are different: Ramjas offers hostels for both girls and boys and its cut-off percentages last year were lower.
G S Tuteja, Deputy Dean of Student Welfare says, “Ramjas College also offers a huge number of courses. It is unfair to measure the popularity of a college based on just the number of applications as there are various factors that lead to the numbers.”
St. Stephen’s College sold 25,700 forms and received around 17,000 forms for its various courses. Officials, however, say this does not mean that the college is less popular as the college has a separate admission procedure with interviews. The high cut-offs and the absence of the college on the common admission form, deter many students from applying.
Meanwhile, as Ramjas College, Kirori Mal College, Hindu College, Hansraj College and GTB Khalsa College take admissions through the DU common pre-admission forms, their numbers are increased as all students end up opting for all courses.
