Admissions gained momentum on Day 2 at Delhi University, with more then half of the seats getting filled. However, the surprise came when admissions in many science courses exceeded the number of seats available.
Daulat Ram College admitted 465 students against 932 seats. The authorities were a bit taken aback when 37 and 28 students were admitted in Chemistry (Hons) and Physics (Hons) against the 12 and 19 available seats, respectively.
Kanan Nanda, principal of Daulat Ram College, said that last year they had to lower their cut-offs for these subjects to fill up seats but this year it is different. “Although a day is left before the first list admissions are closed, we are seeing a rush for science courses. The only reason I can think of is that students are realising that science courses open up more prospects and avenues,” she said.
“We are doing well in BCom and Economics as well and I think there won’t be a second list for Chemistry, Physics, Economics, Psychology and BCom. However, we still have to wait for Monday before we can be sure of this. I am, however, certain that other courses will have a second list,” Nanda said.
The situation was not much different at Hansraj College, which admitted about 332 students on Saturday, reaching the 523 mark against 600 seats. Hansraj too saw the number of admissions in Physics and Chemistry exceed the number of seats available, with 73 and 102 students, respectively, being admitted against the 61 seats in both courses.
