Engrossed in bargaining for footwear at Gaffar Market in Karol Bagh, we suddenly heard this loud noise.
It took us a few minutes to register what exactly was happening around us.
Pushing our way through the crowd to reach the spot, we saw two mutilated bodies being taken in a cart.
With police struggling to cordon off the area, the crowd surged with the arrival of ambulances, fire brigades and mediapersons.
Next, we headed for Jassa Ram Hospital, where most injured victims were taken. Soon, officials there put up a list of those admitted in the hospital. The irony? The list was in
English, a language most victims’ relatives could not comprehend. The absence of a translator just made it a few notches worse.
As we made our way out of the hospital, there was Basanti, about 50 and grandmother of two-year-old Kishan, the first to be declared dead at Jassa Ram Hospital. The evening’s images imprinted on our mind, and Basanti’s cries still echoing in our ears, we made our way from Ghaffar Market.
