  • Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh said the Supreme Court stay on 27 per cent quota for OBC in higher learning is now a legal matter, which the legal experts of the Central Government will tackle. He was speaking at a seminar to mark the Completion of 150 years of First Freedom Struggle of 1857 at Jawaharlal Nehru University here today.

Earlier, the minister met with a hostile reception at the university campus when a group of students raised anti-reservation slogans against him and waved black flags. Wearing black badges, they sought his resignation, and accused him of “dividing the students on the basis of casteist reservation”.

“I do appreciate the feelings of these protestors. But they also must realise that modern India can attain its prominence only when every section is included in its march to progress,” remarked Singh in his response to the protest. He also said that his ministry’s opinion on the quota issue did not differ from that of the Centre and that the Government’s position still remained unchanged.
