To help aircrafts land in poor visibility conditions, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has started the process to install Instrument Landing System (ILS) at Chakeri Airport of Kanpur.

Following an inspection by a Radio Construction Development Unit (RCDU) team of AAI,the installation process of ILS at Chakeri Airport was started on Friday. The project worth Rs 2 crore is expected to be completed within a month.

Manager of Chakeri Airport B K Jha said the locations for the installation of 20 antennas have been identified. After these are installed, the main device will be set up at the airport.

“We hope the ILS services will be available from April-end,” Jha said.

Presently, only one Air India flight operates from Chakeri Airport. Owing to poor visibility conditions in the winter season, the flight connecting Kanpur to New Delhi via Allahabad was cancelled and delayed on several occasions. As a result, the flight met with a lukewarm response from Kanpurites.

The flight was first started in 2005,but due to poor response from passengers,it had to be stopped after 18 months. After a gap of one year, the flight was re-launched on September 20,2007.
