At PGI liver meet,Abhinav pledges to donate organs

City sports star and the country’s first Olympics gold medal winner Abhinav Bindra today pledged his organs through a letter sent to the PGIMER. He sent this letter as he had to leave for his training abroad. On the second day of the 19th Indian National Association of Study of Liver (INASL) conference,the letter sent to to PGIMER was read.

In his letter,ace shooter Bindra stated,“I cannot express my feelings when I won my first gold medal for the country. I wish and pray that many more medals be won by our country. I appeal to my fellow citizens of Chandigarh to be the first ones to pledge your organs. I am a strong believer of the fact that heavens do not need our organs,it is here where the people who are suffering from organ failure and end-stage diseases require organ transplantation,need our organs. Let us pledge our organs for the needy after death.”

“This way you will live in somebody else and get lot of blessings,” states the letter. In fact,the association has been promoting the cause of organ donation throughout the country by roping in celebrities.

Earlier during the day,a plenary session was held at which the three best original papers were presented in the meeting. Dr Y K Batra from the Department of Anesthesia spoke on brain death and its criteria.

Dr Sunil Schroff spoke about the organ donation scenario in India and showed that the country is lagging far behind the West in organ donation and stressed that donations should be hugely increased to meet the demand. Dr AK Seth from R&R Hospital presented the AORTA initiative.
