At UN,Advani hails NREGS as a tonic for rural India,economy

L K Advani has praised the UPA government’s flagship programme,the MGNREGS,for empowering villagers and reviving economic growth.

Senior BJP leader L K Advani has praised the UPA government’s flagship programme,the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS),for empowering villagers and reviving economic growth.

During an address at the 67th session of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday,Advani said MGNREGS is the world’s “largest cash for work programme,which responds to the needs of 53 million poor rural households”.

Stating that at least 50 per cent of the work is reserved for women,he said the programme has helped “break down social inequalities,empower rural people,build up rural infrastructure and revive economic growth”.

During the 2009 Lok Sabha elections,the BJP,in its manifesto,had said that MGNREGS “has turned out to be as much a flop as all other schemes of the government”.

Defending Advani,BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said,“we don’t carry our domestic differences to international fora”. He added that “Advani,as a senior statesman,is representing India at the UNGA. He spoke about the schemes,programmes and other things that India is doing.”
