Atiq moves court, seeks permission to attend Parliament

  • Expelled Samajwadi Party MP, Atiq Ahmed, has moved an application in a local court here seeking permission to attend the forthcoming Budget session of Parliament.

The last time he entered Parliament was to vote in the Presidential election six months back. After that he could not attend any session, as he was declared an absconder by Uttar Pradesh police.

Meanwhile, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee has also sought an explanation from Atiq for his long absention in Parliament. Sources said that Atiq had “preplanned his arrest” to avoid any adverse decision by the Speaker in this connection. “Atiq remained evasive for the UP police for nearly six months, but was suddenly arrested by the crime branch of Delhi Police last week. The entire developments culminating in his dramatic arrest by the Delhi Police even when there was no case pending against him in Delhi, are suspicious,” said a senior police official on condition of anonymity.

“We will follow instructions of the court. He will be taken to Delhi to attend the Budget session if the court says yes to his application,” Surya Kant Tripathi, circle officer, told The Indian Express.

Meanwhile, the district police, which have suffered humiliation following the arrest of its “wanted number one” (Atiq) by their counterparts in national capital, have launched a massive drive to arrest Atiq’s brother and former Samajwadi Party MLA Ashraf and their brother-in-law, Hamza. Both are wanted by the police in several cases and are absconding.
