Praveen Belokar, the driver who had made off with a van and Rs 40 lakh meant for ATMs,was arrested on Sunday from Holy Spirit Hospital, where he had gone to visit his pregnant wife. It was apparently the high hospital bills, and encouragement from friends, that had prompted Belokar,28,to steal the money, the Amboli police said.
The police recovered most of the cash and also arrested three alleged associates,Parshuram Ingle,Ravi Ingle and Deepak Surve.
The van had more than Rs 80 lakh and Belokar took Rs 40 lakh before abandoning it. He was arrested while visiting his wife, nine months pregnant, a police officer said.
Belokar,a native of Buldhana, lived with his wife and mother-in-law in Jogeshwari. The police officer said Parshuram Ingle,a rickshaw driver and Belokars neighbour, had suggested the theft as a way out of his difficulties. Ingles younger brother Ravi and friend Surve, too, egged on Belokar, the officer said.
On Friday morning, assigned to drive the Brinks Arya van with the cash to ATMs in Andheri,he jumped into a rickshaw, probably supplied by one of the Ingle brothers, and made off with the money.
The vehicle was later found abandoned near Mega Mall at Oshiwara,Jogeshwari, minus two boxes containing Rs 40 lakh between them.
ACP (West) Amitabh Gupta said,A major part of the loot has been recovered and we are working on tracing the rest. Belokar has been remanded in police custody till November 26. We will produce the others in court shortly.
