ATM van driver stole Rs 40 lakh for wife’s delivery,caught visiting her

“The van had more than Rs 80 lakh and Belokar took Rs 40 lakh before abandoning it. He was arrested while visiting his wife,nine months pregnant,” a police officer said.

Belokar,a native of Buldhana,lived with his wife and mother-in-law in Jogeshwari. The police officer said Parshuram Ingle,a rickshaw driver and Belokar’s neighbour,had suggested the theft as a way out of his difficulties. Ingle’s younger brother Ravi and friend Surve,too,egged on Belokar,the officer said.

“On Friday morning,assigned to drive the Brinks Arya van with the cash to ATMs in Andheri,he jumped into a rickshaw,probably supplied by one of the Ingle brothers,and made off with the money.”

The vehicle was later found abandoned near Mega Mall at Oshiwara,Jogeshwari,minus two boxes containing Rs 40 lakh between them.

ACP (West) Amitabh Gupta said,“A major part of the loot has been recovered and we are working on tracing the rest. Belokar has been remanded in police custody till November 26. We will produce the others in court shortly.”
