  • With no development in the case of brutal attack on Shamim Modi (39), a professor of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), representatives of the institute on Monday met the home minister Jayant Patil to apprise him of the situation.

“We met Jayant Patil. He has promised to look into the case and ensured that culprit will be nabbed soon,” said Dr. Rajani Konantambigi, a faculty member of the institute.

A tribal rights activist, Modi, was allegedly attacked by a security guard, Rajesh Bahadur alias Jang Bahadur. Modi suffered over 200 injuries and was admitted to a local hospital in Vasai. According to Modi, a senior BJP leader from Madhya Pradesh had planned the attack. “As Modi has named an influential person, we will have to look into the matter closely,” said Jayant Patil.

However, the Manikpur police have registered a house-breaking case. “We have demanded an attempt to murder and conspiracy case to be registered,” said Professor Jaya Goyal.

While Patil has assured to look into the matter, the institute has planned to approach the court seeking CBI inquiry in the case. “We have lost faith in the local police. The police have remained non-committal ever since. We want an independent inquiry,” said Modi’s husband Anurag.

“The accused has fled from Mumbai. We suspect that he has managed to leave India. We are interrogating his family members in Thane,” said S B Pathare, additional superintendent of police, Vasai.
