  • Protesting revenue officials march
Protesting revenue officials march towards the Mini-Secretariat to offer bangles to the Ludhiana DC and SSP on Monday.

Angry revenue officials seem to want to settle scores with those who allegedly assaulted Ludhiana (Central) Tehsildar Major Gurjinder Singh Benipal on June 19. Seeking justice, some members of the Revenue Officers’ Association demanded that the accused be handed over to them.

The revenue officials, who have formed a Joint Action Committee (JAC) to seek justice for Benipal, also blocked traffic on the Ferozepur Road near the circuit house on Monday to express their resentment. Later, they went to the offices of Deputy Commissioner Vikas Garg and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr Sukhchain Singh Gill to offer them bangles for their ‘inaction’ in the case. The two were, however, not present in their respective offices.

Earlier, representatives of as many as 37 organisations of government employees and officials held a four-hour long meeting to discuss the future course of action. The meeting, which was held at Guru Nanak Bhawan near the District Administrative Complex (DAC), was followed by a press conference.

During the press conference, Gurmeet Singh, patron of the Naib Tehsildars Association, demanded that councillor Simarjit Singh Bains be handed over to them so that they could also “teach him a lesson” and beat him in a similar manner. However, chief patron of Revenue Officials Association, K S Randhawa, was quick to cover up for him by saying it was an emotional outburst by Gurmeet Singh.

The revenue officials also seemed perturbed that besides the two accused, no more arrests have been made by the police.

The state government employees also ceased work and observed a strike on Monday and have announced to continue their protests till their demands are not met.
