In the wake of recent attacks on Indians, Australia has stepped up "visible policing" in the vulnerable areas and is amending laws as part of steps to prevent recurrence of such incidents, its Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard has said.

Australia has also initiated steps to ensure that Indians aspiring to receive education there get "accurate" information like rules and the required financial resources so that they face no problems, she told in an interview.

Gillard, who was here to assuage apprehensions regarding security of Indians in the aftermath of attacks, maintained that Australia is a "safe" and a welcome nation for Indians.

Suggesting that the assaults on Indian students were not racist in nature, she said these were motivated by robbery and other law and order issues.

"The advice from police was that these attacks were motivated by robbery and these were genuine policing and crime problems in parts of the cities where these attacks occurred," Gillard said.

"However, whatever the motivation for these attacks, if someone is hurt, we want to respond and we want to do whatever we can to make sure that people are safe and that is the reason that police presence has been increased," she said.

Talking about the steps initiated by her government, Gillard said, "We are keen to ensure that wherever we had problems there is visible policing and that is happening."

The Australian Deputy Prime Minister, who discussed the students' issue with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, insisted that her country is a "safe, multicultural, accepting nation" which is home to a "very sizeable" Indian community.

Attacks on Indians; Aus says it has stepped up policing??By: Dr. Paras Deo | 04-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward To belittle racial attacks on hard working students trying to make their ends meet by working nite shifts, as 'robbery' is something that Ms Gillard can't sell to me who has been racially abused by OZs.Australia still has to learn that it is an immigrant society and most of its population are immigrants. Worse is the police attitude to ridicule racial bashing and to blame the students themselves for travelling late and living in poorer areas. That is plain sick mentality and reflection of intolerant culture. I plead to the future students to consider Europe as an alternative which will benefit India and Europe in the long run. Europe is THE major economic power west of the Suez and the students are the future contacts as well as the future economic ambassadors. In my eyes, AUS has lost its reputation. AUS need to discuss this within its own society. The AUS media is also to blame for not being critical of its own society people.
