Bangalore, September 22: : Facing flak for ‘failure’ to rein in those who vandalized churches in parts of the state, the BJP Government in Karnataka on Monday decided to invoke the stringent Goonda Act against the culprits.

The decision, adopted at an emergent meeting of the state cabinet, comes after a week-long unrest the state witnessed in the form of attacks on about 20 churches and prayer halls volved in attacks on places of worship under the Goonda Act", Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa told a press conference issuing a stern warning to perpetrators of the attacks.

He also accused the opposition parties of trying to topple his government.

"Opposition Congress and JD(S) have hatched a conspiracy to somehow topple the BJP Government", Yeddyurappa, whose government is yet to complete four months in office, charged a day after the VHP dismissed the hand of Sangh Parivar outfits in the attacks.

Yeddyurappa also hit out at the Centre accusing it of ‘bias’ towards the BJP-ruled state in sending warning advisories in the wake of the attacks.

government in Delhi after serial bomb blasts and to the then S M Krishna Government in Karnataka, which the Supreme Court at that time said had no moral right to continue in office because of failure to nab forest brigand Veerappan, he said.

Taking a swipe at JD(S) leader and former Prime Minister H D Devegowda and his son and former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy for demanding the dismissal of his government, Yeddyurappa said "frusturated at losing power, Kumaraswamy and his father are speaking whatever that comes to their mind, losing their (mental) balance"

The state unit BJP President D V Sadanada Gowda alleged that Congress and JD(S) were behind the series of attacks on churches in the state.

"Congress and JD(S) have designed a plot to topple the BJP government by taking advantage of the situation", he alleged at a separate press conference.

The attack on a church in Kolar too has pointed the accusing finger at Congress and the sniffer dogs pressed into investigation stopped at the Congress office, he claimed.

Yeddyurappa earlier in the day called on Governor Rameshwar Thakur and briefed him of the law and order situation and the measures his government has taken to maintain peace and order.

The Chief Minister also visited the residence of Bangalore Archbiship Bernard Morsa who told him that the whole church in the state was hurt over the attacks.

Attack on Churches to stop by Jamsheed Basha on 2008-09-23 09:37:43.817945+05:30
CM Yeddyurappa must act fact to calm down the tempers and restore law and order in the state. Take action against the perpetrators of the crime to instill confidence in the minds of the minorities.
Please respect Hindus sentiments and stop forced conversions by Hindu on 2008-09-23 08:18:40.572409+05:30
The violence against Christians in Karnataka is a reaction to the aggressive propaganda and mindless evangelism of hundreds of foreign-funded, cultic, fundamentalist, fanatic and revivalist Christian groups spread all over the State and elsewhere. They denigrate Hindu gods and rituals as barbaric. They are the root cause of tension between Christian and Hindu communities. Why should anybody be surprised if the ‘extremists’ among Hindus are offended and react violently? It is high time leaders of the established mainline churches, known for their erudition, equipoise and empathy, came out in the open and disowned such provocative acts of intolerance of the fundamentalist Christian groups masquerading as real Christians. How can the Christian preachers propagate that their faith is the best in the world without reading what the scriptures of other faiths have to say? My anguish is shared by many. One can make a difference without being preachy
Responsible Govt. by Appaji Gowda on 2008-09-23 07:57:02.283819+05:30
Blaming others has become a trend in todays politics. BJP in opposition is one thing but in power they have to protect all sections.
Root out basic irritants. by Dr M Mohan Rao, Mysore. on 2008-09-23 07:41:27.387346+05:30
Every right thinking "Indian" would strongly condemn attacks on Churches by Bajrang dal activists, allegedly provoked by some mischievous publications about Hindu scriptures as well as forceful and coercive conversions of poor Hindus to Christianity. It is therefore essential to set up mandatory rules and regulations for any religious conversions. A committee consisting of representatives of various interested parties, NGO’s and headed by a retired judiciary officer should be formed at District levels to screen any religious conversions. Person seeking conversion should be interviewed by the Committee and the religious conversion should be registered at the Govt. Registrar’s office. Setting up strict rules to allow voluntary religious conversions would prevent any mischievous and overzealous conversions and resultant violent interactions.
Volience agst Christians by Natu on 2008-09-23 06:18:28.811971+05:30
While I strongly deplore the voilence against the Christians, and seek that the culprits be punished as per law, I will say that the Crhristian organisations are asking for trouble by converting poor HIndus by allurement to their fold. Let them convert one poor Muslim to Christianity and face the Muslim wrath. There are enough poor Muslims in our country, so why are Christians only after the Hindus. Becuase Hindus aer tolerant. All the good deeds that the Christian organisation are doing in the field of education and medi-care are nullified because there ultimate aim is to convert Hindus to Christians.
Enough! by Dod on 2008-09-23 05:30:48.245629+05:30
That's the pot calling the kettle black, for the UPA government. The UPA shows step motherly treatment towards other citizens and that is ok, and after all the hue and cry from the rest of the country they finally acted. Not that the attack on the churches have to be overlooked, but come on people, the Congress and the UPA definitely have a clear agenda and that is to appease only the minority. But seriously people leave the house of God alone, as we do not want anymore violence in our country. When are we going to think in terms of things being good for India and not for a particular community.

BJP has to understand and accept that the renegade Bajarangis are indulging in such acts by design. Their target are the BJP and Advani, not the Christians. That great worthy Sudarshan, even though he was silenced by hids other RSS colleagues, has not reconciled to Advani being projected as the PM candidate. It is time the BJP shoul take courage in both hands and disown and throw out the renegades from the Party.
The danger within- the Secular Apologist by The Hindu Awakeining on 2008-09-23 04:04:46.405183+05:30
Isnt it ironic that the Muslim community immediately after a Muslim led terrorist strike rallies to defend the accused and air their self inflicted greviences as justified "reaction" and the secular apologists led by the Congress try to pacify their beloved vote bank as the top priority. The terrorist dens are the Madarassas like Azamgarh mashrooming with the drugs and gulf donations which have the sole agenda of destroying we Hindu by labelling us infidels in our partitioned homeland! And what does the Congress do? Justify that these religious desposts are actually secular citizens who have been terrorised by the BJP who incidently is "enemy number one" for the Congress and allies! The Kashmir fiasco in which secessionists are openly allowed to deface Indian nationalism while terming Hindus as vandals for opposing forcible conversions! Muslims are traitors is a proven fact by the partition of India. It was the slogan of Islam in danger which led to Hindu massacre. History Repeating?

The problem is there are differences between Hinduism and other religions.Islam and Christianity claim that theirs is only religion and all others go to hell.Although, Hindus accept Allah or Jesus as God like Ram or Siva or Krishna and as avatars this is not liked by Christians and Muslims. They want to show Hindusim in poor light. We all should accept to live with differences and there is nothing wrong. There is no need to convert followers of other religions. Why Chrisitans are not converting Muslims as Christians?Because Muslims desist and oppose even if they are poor. Unfortunately, Hindus in India and especially, who are poor are converted by Christian Institutions as Christians. It is time Govt.should stop these conversions and should not give benefits for converts. Govt. should support poor people irrespective of caste or religion and treat all religions equally. Hindus need not suffer for the sake of Secularism or encourage Christianity and Islam
Attack on religious institutions by Shankaran Nair on 2008-09-23 00:26:41.198938+05:30
Whatever one may attribute to the mindless attack on religious institutions. This is not the proper way to fight the so called conversion. Who was converted any way. If one knows who was converted produce them and behead if you can do it. But by attacking about 150 years old institutions some wrong things are being made in the name of fighting conversion. Whoever is ruling the country or state they are doing a wrong thing by giving protection to the religious terrorists. How can you prevent conversion by attacking a religious institution. All religions are alike and all human beings believe in God. Nothing should be done against the sentiments of the people and consequences will be unmanageable. Till date the communities have lived peacefully and being friendly with each other. Suddenly what has prompted attack on the institution.
What a Pity mother land! by UB Jayanthi on 2008-09-23 00:11:29.01479+05:30
It is interesting that minority community wants police composed of minority personnel and members of community when the police raid them. Mr Paswan says BJP wanted sites for Kasmir Pandits but des not mention of sites for minority. These statements show what soprt of leaders we have. The minority community members donot have confidence even if a police officer dies. Mr. Paswan forgot that his hate of Hindus, being a SC man, shows alck of depth. Why he did not protest when Pandits are hit and today blames that minority members should be given land and not Pandits.

Bishops cannot order any mmore indian ruling leader. Is it not enough to make india the poorest at the time of independence of a country richest before british tookover? Yes we allow all religions to practice peacefully their word of god. But we donot our poor unintelligent people converted in the name of enlightnment. First respect by church of the government is good thing to start with and he cannot chide a leader.
One-sided picture by Indian on 2008-09-22 21:20:59.286784+05:30
The protests across the country are masking the reason behind the attacks on Christians and the media is blowing these incidents out of proportion. Everyone talks of the 1992 violence in Mumbai Godhra . Nobody talks about the burning of the Radhabai chawl that killed 16 people, which provoked sharp reaction from the Hindu community and Marad killing which was buried silently by so called seculars. The protests, organised by some communities, are making the the victims look like offenders. While Christian protestors speak of human rights violations, what about the rights of the four people, including a swamy, who were killed
Congress and JD(S) are responsible by Ann on 2008-09-22 21:09:39.31966+05:30
This is certainly the act of Congress and JD(S). They must have taken advice from the very experienced rioter CM of Andhra, YSR Reddy.

Why IE NDTV chose to ignore this continued onslaught on Hinduism by Hindu on 2008-09-22 20:36:36.894135+05:30
In a move that touches the pit’s bottom, the UPA government has changed the emblem of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan from Lotus and shining Sun to Cross and Crescent. And this has been done in the name of “broader reflection of national ethos.” The Board of Governors of KVS in its 79th meeting held on 26.6.2008 approved the new logo and a circular was sent to all the offices and schools of the Sangathan on July 17, 2008, to change the emblem in all the publications and communications. Though the chairman of KVS, HRD Minister Arjun Singh did not attend the meeting, the minutes of the meeting stated that the emblem has been approved by the chairman. His deputy Shri Md Ali Ashraf Fatmi, Minister of State, HRD
Stop Religious conversions - exploiting poverty PEACE willthen return by bHARATH on 2008-09-22 20:28:35.137011+05:30
It began with the arrival of Christian missionaries in the area who found the remote region very conducive to conduct prosetylization amongst the poor tribals. The conversions continued unhindered until the arrival of Swami Laxmanananda who put strenuous efforts to stop conversions and help reconversion to Hinduism as well. If not for his effort Kandhamal would have been another Nagaland in the making where the separatist movement has wrecked havoc in the state. The aggressive Christian proselytization in Orissa today pitched previously peaceful tribals into warring camps of Christians and non-Christian. This has has vitiated the peace that has existed with various communities for millenia. Why Orissa Orissa has been specially targeted because of a huge tribal population. This allows the missionaries to work from the scrutiny of the media and carry our their nefarious activities. In Kandhamal district, for instance, the Christian population has increased from six per cent in 19
